Fire and Ice

There's an icy rain falling outside. All the usual warnings have come across the weather sites and the twitter feeds - stay off the roads if at all possible. Plans to meet with friends today were postponed due to weather. All the more reason to settle in at home with a cup of coffee and the ever-essential keyboard, to finish this week's sermon in the midst of various daydreams, watching the cats entertain themselves, and other amusements.

Even though the light in the house matches the gray skies outside, there are beautiful sights of light all around. Candles lit here and there. A fire in the fireplace, made thankfully so easily by the turn of a knob and the kindling of the gas flame. The lights of the Christmas tree, there to enjoy for (at least!) a few more days.

All is calm, all is bright.

But who is out there in this weather, with no warmth, no fireplace, no hot cup of coffee, no comfortable place to sit? Who needs whatever it is that I can give? And how do I find them, share with them what I have, one connection at a time, one helping hand at a time?

The blessing God gives me today is an inability to rest comfortably here without remembering those who do not have this privilege, and a yearning to do more, to give more, to help more.
